Official press release from Office of Former Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ)

Garrett Decries Political Games Democrats are Playing with Taxes

Dec. 2, 2010

Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) today issued the following statement after Democrats brought to the House floor a bill that fails to extend all of the current tax rates set to expire on January 1, 2011:

“The American voters couldn’t have been clearer on Election Day.  They want us to end the uncertainty coming out of Washington, they want us to create jobs and they want us to put a stop to the massive tax hikes set to destroy our already fragile economy.  Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi and her Democrat colleagues in the House still haven’t gotten that message.  Rather than work with Republicans to stop all of the looming tax increases, Speaker Pelosi has chosen to beat back the hand of bipartisanship by bringing a bill to the floor that fails to extend all of the current tax rates and will have no chance of survival in the Senate.

“My Republican colleagues and I have maintained all along that if the president and Democrat leaders put forth a plan to stop all of the looming tax hikes, they could count on our support.  However, rather than work in a bipartisan fashion to extend the current tax rates for all income brackets, Democrats have chosen to play political games with our economy when we can least afford it.  My number one priority right now is creating jobs and growing our economy.  You do that by maintaining the current tax rates so that no American is hit with a massive tax increase on New Year’s Day.  If House Democrats don’t take action before the end of the year to stop all of the tax hikes, Republicans will in January.”
