Summary:
The 107th Congress is beginning to debate a number of food safety proposals including whether to consolidate into a single agency all food safety inspection and labeling activities or whether to support a blue ribbon panel to explore a new approach to the federal food safety structure. Congress has been asked in this year's budget request to allocate more resources to monitor mad cow disease and foot and mouth disease. Other proposals are likely to require mandatory labeling and testing of genetically modified foods. Recently the House supported funding for an emerging public health problem: antimicrobial resistance.
