Summary:
Congressional leaders and the Bush Administration have placed broad and often controversial international trade issues high on the legislative agenda during the 107th Congress. A free trade agreement with Jordan and a bilateral trade agreement with Vietnam were both approved in 2001. Legislation was also enacted providing conditions under which Mexican trucks will be permitted to operate in the United States. Several other major issues, including provision of trade promotion ('fast-track') authority for the President, renewing certain trade preferences, revising export controls, enhancing export financing, assisting firms and workers affected by imports, and revising trade remedy statutes await additional congressional action this year.
