Summary:
This report outlines the amended FY2002 defense budget request from the Bush administration,
delivered to the Hill in June 2001. The report presents defense budget data in a manner designed to
provide various perspectives on U.S. military spending. Part I presents basic data on the amended
Bush Administration FY2002 national defense budget request, including data on budget authority and
outlays for the Department of Defense and for the national defense budget function. Part II shows
trends in overall defense spending, including figures on the growth and decline of defense spending,
on defense outlays as a share of federal expenditures, defense outlays as a share of gross domestic
product and foreign military spending. Part III defines key defense budget terms.
To illustrate trends in the regular defense program, most of the data included in this report
exclude costs of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, which was largely financed by allied
contributions.
