Summary:
This report summarizes the proceedings of a CRS seminar for congressional staff on appropriations for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Topics discussed included the recent funding history of NIH and current proposals to double its budget in 5 years, ideas on what NIH could do with substantial new resources, cautions and questions about NIH's ability to make maximum efficient use of such resources, the desire of patient advocacy groups to be more involved in NIH research priority-setting, and current NIH activities responding to these various issues.
