Foreign investors poured record amounts (in nominal terms) of funds into U.S. businesses and real estate in 1998 and 1999, continuing the expansion that began in 1993. Europeans as a whole are the largest foreign direct investors, both in terms of annual investments and in terms of their cumulative holdings of investments in the United States.
