Summary:

For FY2001, the Administration requested nearly $800 million in the foreign aid budget for bilateral health assistance programs. More than one third of this amount will be directed to programs in Africa. Of this, nearly 30 percent is devoted to HIV/AIDS activities, $63 million to the infectious disease initiative, and $110 million for UNICEF. An additional $50 million was requested in the International Organization and Program account of the Foreign Aid bill for GAVI, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization.
