Summary:
This report discusses the scope and nature of the safety challenge associated with the Firestone tire recall, and summarizes NHTSA's defect investigations process and the relevant actions that NHTSA has taken to date. Second, the efforts of Ford Motor Company and Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. to deal with this challenge and associated economic impacts of the reported tire failures, and the recall are summarized. Finally, a discussion is presented of some of the key public policy issues discussed during the various congressional hearings together with a capsule of provisions of several House and Senate bills now being considered to strengthen the federal role in this area.
