Summary:

Venezuela remains in the throes of a deep economic and humanitarian crisis under the authoritarian rule of President Nicolás Maduro of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). In May 2018, Maduro defeated Henri Falcón, a former governor, in a presidential election boycotted by the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) of opposition parties and deemed illegitimate by the United States, the European Union (EU), and most Western Hemisphere countries. Maduro, narrowly elected in 2013 after the death of President Hugo Chávez (1999-2013), is unpopular. Nevertheless, he has used the courts, security forces, and electoral council to stifle opposition, which is in disarray. Maduro has cracked down further since surviving an apparent assassination attempt in August 2018.
