Summary:
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is in the midst of implementing numerous provisions of the 1990 amendments to the Clean Air Act. Current efforts include preparation for Phase 2 of the acid precipitation program, development of tighter emission standards for vehicles and fuels, promulgation of controls on sources of 188 air toxics, approval of state implementation plans for the ozone and carbon monoxide standards, and implementation of revisions to the ambient air quality standards for both ozone and particulates. EPA actions to implement these programs will provide numerous opportunities for oversight in the 106th Congress, and possibly the beginning of hearings regarding future reauthorization of the Act.
