Summary:
As use of the Internet grows, an issue of considerable concern is the privacy of information collected by operators of sites on the World Wide Web. In the 106th Congress, a provision related to Internet privacy called Amy Boyer's Law was included in the conference version of the Commerce-Justice-State (CJS) Appropriations bill. Although it remains in the final version of that bill as sent to the President, a provision in the Labor-HHS-Appropriations bill strikes that language. H.R. 4857 was reported from committee, but did not clear the 106th Congress. The 107th Congress remains strongly interested in Internet privacy and related issues. This report provides an overview of Internet privacy issues and tracks pending legislation.
