Congress's newest member chooses campaign director as chief

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on June 3, 2019

Fred Keller (R-Pa.), Congress's newest member, has chosen his campaign director as his new office chief of staff.

Jon Anzur takes the staff helm as Keller begins his tenure in Congress today. Voters elected Keller in a landslide to fill the vacancy left when Tom Marino (R) resigned from office for a private-sector job earlier this year.

Before joining Keller's team this year, Anzur worked for ex-Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.), with experience both as communications director in the congressman's official office and as campaign manager to Barletta's 2016 re-election campaign and unsuccessful 2018 Senate bid.

After five years in the House, an aide to Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) has retired to AARP.

Fernando Ruiz joined the nonprofit this month as a government affairs adviser. Last year, AARP disclosed nearly $8.3 million in federal lobbying expenses, mostly through its in-house team.

Ruiz most recently worked as an LA to Smith and previously worked for retired Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (D-Texas).

GOP leads the way with state-legislator party defections

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on May 28, 2019

When Michigan Rep. Larry Inman was booted from the House GOP caucus last week, he became the seventh state legislator to change party affiliations so far this year.

Inman, who was federally indicted early this month on charges of extortion and solicitation of bribery, is one of five Republicans to leave the party. Of those, three - Iowa Rep. Andrew McKean, Calif Rep. Brian Maienschein and N.J. Sen. Dawn Addiego - now represent their constituents as Democrats. McKean and Maienschein both explicitly named President Donald Trump as the impetus for their switch. Only one GOP defector, Maine Rep. Donald Marean, is now an independent. Inman is not enrolled in a party now.

Democrats, meanwhile, have lost two members this year: Nick Bain announced his switch to the Republican Party in March; Bryce Edgmon, who caucused with Republicans despite officially working as a Democrat, dropped his party affiliation before being re-elected as Alaska House speaker in February.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has powered up with the addition of a House LA.

Brianna Hearn joins the federal agency, which regulates interstate energy transmission, as an energy-industry analyst.

Hearn comes from the office of Rep. Troy Balderson (R-Ohio), where she handled energy, environment and other issues. She previously worked for ex-Rep. Leonard Lance (R-N.J.) and Reps. Louis Gohmert (R-Texas) and Bill Posey (R-Fla.).

About Caught Our Eye

We spend a large part of our days looking at data. Documents often come in by the dozens and hundreds. And while most are boring - how interesting can staring at a phone directory or salary records be, for example? - we find daily reasons for interest, amusement or even concern packed in the documents. So we are launching a new running feature that we call "Caught our Eye."

Longer than tweets but shorter than most blog posts, Caught our Eye items will bring back the interest in reviewing documents and researching people. Some items might bring hard, breaking news. Others will raise eyebrows and lead some into further inquiry. Others might be good for a joke or two around the water cooler. All will enlighten about the people or workings of Capitol Hill.

Caught our Eye items will be published each morning for LegiStorm Pro subscribers. Non-Pro site users will be able to receive the news items a few hours later. In addition to having immediate access to the news, LegiStorm Pro users will have a handy way to search and browse all past items.
