Controversial candidate Marjorie Taylor Greene lists Big Tech as her "enemy" - but is happy to invest

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Aug. 31, 2020

Marjorie Taylor Greene, controversial GOP nominee likely to replace retiring Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga.) in Congress, positions herself as anti-Big Tech. But the Republican candidate has no problem investing in Apple, Facebook and her other purported "enemies."

Greene, perhaps best known for her embrace of QAnon and other conspiracy theories, lists investments in multiple Silicon Valley giants on her latest financial disclosure report. She and her husband own stock in Alphabet, Amazon, Apple and Facebook. Greene personally owns between $15,001 and $50,000 in Apple stock and lists the value of her other Big Tech investments as between $1,001 and $15,000 each.

Greene has at various points listed "Big Tech" among her "enemies" and called for an end to the industry's censorship of conservatives. She's called out Facebook in particular for "defending terrorists" after the social-media site removed a campaign video in which she brandishes an AR-15 and warns Antifa to "stay the hell out of Northwest Georgia."

Rep. Hagedorn on pace to overspend annual budget

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Aug. 28, 2020

Rep. Jim Hagedorn (R-Minn.), who faces major scrutiny for office overspending on ethically questionable expenses, is still on pace to overspend his official budget by year's end, according to disbursement records released today.

His office's expenses include an additional $10,000 paid to a company owned by one of his staffers, which has raised concern from ethics watchdogs.

In the first quarter, Hagedorn's office paid more than $60,000 for printing and reproduction to Invocq Technologies. According to the Minnesota Reformer, Invocq is owned at least partially by part-time Hagedorn staffer John Sample. The office's second quarter disclosures, released today, include an additional $10,000 payment to Invocq, dated Feb. 25. The office paid another $41,000 to the company last September.

In June, Hagedorn fired his chief of staff, Peter Su, over "irregular spending," according to a Daily Caller report. The congressman has since hired an attorney, ostensibly in anticipation of a House Ethics investigation into his office's spending.

In the first quarter, Hagedorn's office disclosed that they had spent 39.8 percent of their annual budget in just three months. In the second quarter, the office disclosed they'd used another 23 percent of their total budget (some of the office's expenses reported in the second quarter disbursement books are first quarter expenses).

If the office continues to report similar levels of expenses as reported in the second quarter, it will exceed its annual allowance. In the event that a member overspends, he or she is personally responsible for re-paying that money. Any unspent office funds, meanwhile, are returned to the U.S. Treasury.

A former Democratic staffer has returned to the Senate, now with four years of public-lands lobbying under her belt.

Janelle DiLuccia is now energy and environment policy adviser to Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.). DiLuccia spent the last four years at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, where she was associate director for public-lands policy.

Before leaving the Hill in 2016, she worked for Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and ex-Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.).

Sen. Cantwell aide heads to Humana

A Democratic staffer has taken nearly two decades of Senate work experience to the health-insurance industry.

Rosemary Gutierrez is now government-affairs director at Humana, one of the country's biggest health insurers. In the last year, Humana disclosed federal lobbying expenses of more than $6.5 million.

Gutierrez comes from the office of Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), where she most recently served as deputy chief of staff. Before that, she worked for the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee and for former Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa).

Public-policy firm adds ex-Schumer aide

The Raben Group has added a Hispanic media whiz with ties to Democratic leadership.

Audrey López joined the public-policy group as director for media and communications. The Raben Group's heavy-hitting client roster includes Pfizer and MasterCard.

Lopez most recently worked for Culture ONE World, where she worked to increase Hispanic participation in the U.S. Census. She's also worked two stints on the Hill, as Hispanic media director to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and as scheduler to ex-Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.).

About Caught Our Eye

We spend a large part of our days looking at data. Documents often come in by the dozens and hundreds. And while most are boring - how interesting can staring at a phone directory or salary records be, for example? - we find daily reasons for interest, amusement or even concern packed in the documents. So we are launching a new running feature that we call "Caught our Eye."

Longer than tweets but shorter than most blog posts, Caught our Eye items will bring back the interest in reviewing documents and researching people. Some items might bring hard, breaking news. Others will raise eyebrows and lead some into further inquiry. Others might be good for a joke or two around the water cooler. All will enlighten about the people or workings of Capitol Hill.

Caught our Eye items will be published each morning for LegiStorm Pro subscribers. Non-Pro site users will be able to receive the news items a few hours later. In addition to having immediate access to the news, LegiStorm Pro users will have a handy way to search and browse all past items.
