Sen. Warren is dominating the publishing sphere

Posted by Heavyn Lester on Oct. 7, 2024

The day job Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has doesn't pay nearly as well as her side gig of writing books.

Warren has made over $4.6 million from book advances and royalties on her 14 publications since assuming office in 2013. She earned more than $4.6 million from 2013 through last year, according to personal financial disclosures. By comparison, her day job pays just $174,000 a year.

Warren is the most-published current member of Congress, publishing twice as many books as the second most-published members, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.). Her most recent publications, "Persist" - a compilation of autobiographical stories - and the children's book "Pinkie Promises," were both published in 2021.

Kelly's seven books - the majority of which consist of his "Astrotwins" and "Mousetronaut" children's series - make him the second most-published current Democratic member of Congress after Warren. Kelly received approximately $62,000 from book advances and royalties between 2020-2023, disclosures show.

The most-published GOP members trail far behind Warren.

Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) share the distinction of being the most-published GOP members, each producing six publications.

In recent years, Cruz has raked in big money from book advances and royalties, reporting approximately $1.2 million in earnings in annual financial disclosures from 2020-2023. He is followed by Paul, who reported earning approximately $240,000 from publications, and Lee, who reported making $172,000.
