Summary:

The Intelligence Community (IC) is a collection of disparate organizations that all carry out some intelligencerelated function. It currently comprises of 17 component organizations spread across 2 independent agencies and 6 separate departments of the federal government. The bulk of the IC resides within the Department of Defense (DOD). The two most senior key players in the IC are the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and the Under Secretary of Defense (Intelligence) (USD(I)) because together, they coordinate and integrate a number of interagency activities designed to facilitate the seamless integration of nationallevel and tactical-level intelligence efforts The positions of DNI and USD(I) were both created after 9/11. The DNI position was created by the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act (IRTPA) of 2004 (P.L. 108-458). The USD(I) position was created with the enactment of the National Defense Authorization Act on December 2, 2002 (P.L. 107-314).
